Grok 4.5 adds another option, but it also makes that governance question harder to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Grok 4.5 actually does<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok 4.5 is a large language model from xAI designed for coding, technical reasoning and multi-step work. A large language model is the underlying AI engine that reads instructions, examines relevant information and generates a response, such as code, documentation or a proposed solution to a software problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GitHub Copilot is the platform through which developers interact with that engine. Copilot provides the interface, connects the model to code and development tools, and applies organisational controls. Grok 4.5 is one of the engines that can now operate behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The model became available in GitHub Copilot on 28 July 2026. Depending on the organisation&#8217;s Copilot plan and policies, developers may be able to select it from the model picker, while administrators retain control over which models are permitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok 4.5 can process text and images and has a context window of up to 500,000 tokens. In plain English, that means it can examine a large amount of code, documentation and related information during one task without immediately losing track of earlier details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also supports different reasoning levels. A developer can use lighter reasoning for a quick question or allow the model more time to work through a complicated debugging or software design problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The bigger story is choice, not Grok<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important development for CIOs is not that one more AI model has entered the market. It is that GitHub Copilot is becoming a multi-model platform where teams can choose different AI engines for different jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is similar to assigning work within a human team. You would not ask your most expensive specialist to update a basic document, and you would not give a high-risk system redesign to an inexperienced employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI models should be managed in much the same way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fast, lower-cost models<\/strong> can handle routine explanations, small code changes and documentation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stronger reasoning models<\/strong> can investigate complex defects, review larger changes and plan work across several systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Agent-focused models<\/strong> can complete a sequence of actions, such as examining files, updating code, running tests and correcting problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why a single-model standard may no longer produce the best result. The better approach is an approved portfolio, with clear guidance on which models suit which tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We previously examined whether leaders should shortlist Grok 4.5 for coding agents. Its arrival in Copilot makes a controlled assessment easier because teams can compare it within a platform they already use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Model choice can improve productivity without changing platforms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The immediate benefit is that organisations do not need to introduce a separate coding tool simply to evaluate Grok 4.5. Developers can access it through GitHub Copilot alongside approved alternatives from other providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reduces the disruption associated with new accounts, separate interfaces and disconnected usage reporting. It also allows a team to run the same task through several models and compare the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider a 200-person organisation with 40 developers. If better model selection saves each developer just 20 minutes per working day, the organisation could recover roughly 2,900 hours a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not mean every saved minute becomes a direct cash saving. It may instead mean faster releases, shorter incident resolution times or more work completed without adding headcount. Those are still outcomes a CIO can measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More choice can also mean less cost control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The model picker creates a simple temptation: developers select the newest or most powerful model for every task. Under usage-based AI billing, that behaviour can turn a predictable subscription into a variable monthly expense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GitHub Copilot usage is influenced by the model selected and the amount of information processed and generated. Large codebases, long conversations and higher reasoning settings can therefore consume more of an organisation&#8217;s AI allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we discussed in our review of GitHub Copilot billing changes, AI cost management now needs more than counting licences. CIOs should track consumption by team, model, task and business result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A practical policy might allow lightweight models for everyday work while reserving Grok 4.5 and other advanced models for large refactoring, difficult debugging and agent-based workflows. The objective is not to block access. It is to avoid paying premium rates for routine jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Security approval still matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GitHub states that Grok 4.5 operates in Copilot under a zero-data-retention arrangement with xAI. This means prompts and generated responses are not intended to be stored by the model provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is useful, but it is not a complete risk assessment. Australian organisations must still consider what employees place into prompts, how access is controlled and whether generated code introduces security or privacy problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before enabling the model widely, confirm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>which repositories and teams may use it;<\/li>\n<li>whether confidential, personal or customer information is permitted;<\/li>\n<li>how credentials, passwords and security keys are kept out of prompts;<\/li>\n<li>whether generated changes require human review and automated testing;<\/li>\n<li>how activity, cost and unusual usage will be monitored; and<\/li>\n<li>whether the arrangement meets contracts, the Australian Privacy Act and internal policies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI-generated code should also pass through the same security checks as human-written code. For Azure environments, that can include Microsoft Defender, which identifies threats and unsafe configurations, and Wiz, which shows where cloud weaknesses could create real business exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This supports the Essential Eight, the Australian government&#8217;s recommended cybersecurity framework, particularly controls covering application patching, restricted administrator access and approved software. AI does not replace those controls; it makes consistent enforcement more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Run a business pilot rather than a popularity contest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not ask developers whether Grok 4.5 feels impressive. Give it representative work and compare it against the models already approved in Copilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Select three task types.<\/strong> Use one routine task, one difficult debugging task and one multi-file agent task.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Define success first.<\/strong> Measure completion time, review effort, defects, rework and AI consumption.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use real but controlled code.<\/strong> Choose internal projects that represent normal work without exposing highly sensitive information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep human approval.<\/strong> Developers must review, test and understand changes before release.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Review the full cost.<\/strong> Include developer time, AI usage, security review and any rework caused by incorrect output.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For teams comparing broader options, our guide to GitHub Copilot, Claude Code and Gemini agents explains why governance, integration and operating cost matter as much as raw model capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The CIO decision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok 4.5 gives technology leaders more negotiating power and reduces dependence on a single AI provider. It also provides another potentially useful option for complex coding and agent-based development inside GitHub Copilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the winning strategy is not to declare one model the company standard forever. Models change quickly.
